I have a book recommendation that might be right up your alley: Better Off–Flipping the Switch on Technology (by Eric Bende). It’s a tale of a young man who sets off to join an Amish/Mennonite/mixed religious community for a year and ends up liking it (as well as finding out basic truths about life) along the way. He did this project for his college thesis, and it became a book.

He finds out that so-called “labor-saving devices” don’t really save labor or anything else…they just cost and keep costing in storage and maintenance.

Once his thesis year is up, he returns to the modern world, only to remake his own world with the best from both societies. The book’s definitely a learning experience and excellent teaching tool–it makes you think about so many things.
