Drupal and Magento new market leader ?

Just heard that some web companies are treating Drupal and Magento Commerce as new market leader. I can’t believe that some will pay thousands of pounds on websites built in already free network.

Just think that some are taking advantage off “their skills”. By simple copy pasting code from one place to another isn’t Web Design or Web Developing!

What happened to the good old fashion way, where web companies would built websites from scratch, built the CMS, layout and make it SEO friendly! What happened to the passion of seeing a project built and at the end giving it birth and make it public, so that others can see your latest work.

It’s not all about money and it’s  not all always that simple to built an website. Most of the current web companies forgot about what web developing is and what it meant! I just whant to dare some to built their own framework and to promote it like drupal and not just downloading the source and installing it on an another web server and after half an hour they will be proud of just installing another web script. I’m sorry I can’t do that :(. Sorry that I’m not cost effective for some and I’m “not in touch” with the world that their living in.

Just needed to add this to the blog, needed to add this feeling because I can see that the internet is turning in the wrong way I can’t do nothing about it. I can’t tell people what to do, but I can atleast show others that their not the center of the Earth and it’s not always about them and about their work.

Sorry for the post :) I know some have been waiting for tutorials, but just needed to clear my mind and to see what position I would take and of course making planes for the future.

Cheers,
Marius Visan

Hi,

I hear what you’re saying, but I can’t agree with it. Isn’t that like saying let’s stop buying cars and driving around in vehicles that all look the same. Instead we should be building our own???

The bottom line is that the majority of designers are just that ‘designers’. they don’t know how to building an ecommerce cart from scratch. Why the heck would they want to anyway? These apps can all be customised beyond all recognition while still leaving the functional side intact.

The idea of going back to the way things were is an ideal and unrealistic at that. 10 years ago, these apps didn’t exist and the ones that did were much simpler. There is a dedicated team of 50 people working at Magento, so how many of your team can you afford to dedicate to creating a similar app, only to find that i’ts still not as good as the free one that they’re offering.

there, that’s my bit said =)

Hi Mark,
The thing with the open source projects is that we can all contribute to their development.
So, I’m guessing that I can find anything I need on their plug-in page and just editing it a little bit to suit my needs.
But the thing was that a lot of web companies choose this way because it’s cost effective and it’s not all about money. It’s about creativity and bringing your product to the surface. If you’re that good ( and by you I mean all of us ) why not spend 2 months developing our framework in php or something else, and just use that to deliver it to our clients.
No, they just download an open source script, install it on the server, edit a few things, change the layout and cash in a lot of money. And the thing is that they promise their client that this is the best way to do that thing. I understand that they need to promote themselves, check out the video in Truth in Advertising.

This is not the way to go! You have to be honest with a client and tell him about the risk of an open source project and what their role is with that project and not just telling them that it’s the greatest thing on the world.

Cheers,
Marius
